The Best Music of 2010

It was another great year in music. I continue to discover great new artists. Almost half of my favorite songs from the year were from artists that were either new or new to me.

The best overall albums of 2010:

jonsiJonsi - Go
Jonsi is the lead singer of Icelandic post-rock group Sigur Ros. While I have been a fan of Sigur Ros for years, I think that I like Jonsi as a solo artist even more than the band.

Sigur Ros' music is orchestral, sweeping, like a movie soundtrack at times. The lyrics are frequently just gibberish. Jonsi's voice is just another instrument in the musical palette. I've used several tracks for camp programs.

Jonsi's solo work adds a bit more pop and playfulness to the mix.

black_keysThe Black Keys - Brothers
I was never a Black Keys fan. I had heard some of their stuff before, but was never intrigued enough to go find one of their albums. And then I heard Brothers.

The most interesting thing about this album is that it was mostly recorded in my hometown (rather infamously because of some comments made by the band about the area being a ghost town, which honestly is true). I think the spirit of the Muscle Shoals Sound was a perfect match for the band's sound.

new_pornThe New Pornographers - Together
I'm a long-time fan of the New Pornographers. This one was no re-invention of the Canadian supergroup, just another solid outing.

If you're into indie-pop, this one was a must-own.

The best songs of 2010:

On to my favorite music of 2010. True to form, as mention in my previous blog entry, mog.com has changed the way I do music. So no downloads this year. I don't own most of the music in this year's collection, I'm just renting it.
