iGTD vs OmniFocus
I'm still rocking the GTD process. I have stuck with it and not faltered. The one area that I have never really gotten going is the weekly review. Mostly due to scheduling. I had mine scheduled for a Friday afternoon, which just wasn't working out. This week, I decided to reschedule it for 8:30 a.m. on Monday mornings. I think it works better as a weekly preview. What is the weekly preview? Here's my list of items to go through:
1) Process inbox in office.
2) Process email inbox, clear it out
3) Review @waiting for (@ represents a context)
4) Review Action and Respond folders in email
5) Review All Project Lists and Action Lists
6) Review Tickler Files
7) Review calendar for next week
8) Empty Head
9) Review Someday/Maybe List
10) Review all work in progress support material to trigger new actions
11) Process the Read/Review items I have collected
Finding the perfect GTD app for the Mac is a big piece of the puzzle for me. I don't want to carry around a notebook all the time. I'm not a pen and paper kind of guy. I'm dying for a solution that works with my iPhone, though that will likely have to wait until a) Apple adds to-do support to the iPhone or b) Apple opens up 3rd party app support in February. I have been using the freeware iGTD for a long time:

But recently I've been evaluating OmniGroup's OmniFocus:

Even though OmniFocus is commercialware and will end up costing me $35, I'm thinking of switching for good. Right now, I'm mirroring everything in both. iGTD is about to undergo a transformation, which may swing the pendulum back in the other direction, but after a short learning curve period, I'm finding that it's much easier to deal with all of the stuff you have to do and to filter out the dozens and dozens of actions I have in all of my projects and to just focus on the next actions with OmniFocus.
OmniFocus has a cool feature called perspectives where you can setup a view and then come back to it. For instance, I have a view that shows me just the next actions available for the context @Office, @Computer - Work, and @Waiting For, that is all of the contexts that involve things that I can do while I'm at work. I can't do @Home or @Sunday School items at work.. the context is wrong. I can save that as a perspective and quickly pull it up:

I also have a perspective for items that are due, using the same contexts:

You can look at what you have to do by context or by project. The smarter way is to focus on context and only see what you can do right now. I found that in iGTD, I was never really using the context mode. I would set the context of items, but never view it that way. In OmniFocus, I'm using it more and more.
OmniFocus is also smart about synching to iCal. You choose which projects sync to which calendars in iCal (or whether or not they sync at all.
It also recognizes that some things are single items and they don't belong on a project list. You can create lists like that for your Someday/Maybe items, or for other special things. I have a list of "Music to Check Out" and "Books to Buy."
The app is supposed to be finished in a couple of months. They've already dropped one of my favorite features, the web interface that would've allowed you to access it from anywhere via web browser (especially on an iPhone), but I'm hopeful that they'll bring it back with 2.0. They probably should focus on getting the interface right for 1.0.
